This is the 6th year of participation. This means that including this year we will have distributed over 4000 dictionaries to third graders in our community. We think it is a very worthwhile project. When students see us out in the community doing other projects — they recognize the “ELKS” sign and will come over to thank us for the dictionaries.

We have participated in this project for four years in three different school districts. The students and the teachers really enjoy the contribution to their classroom. The Cloquet Rotary club feels this is a fantastic project. The students enjoy the dictionary. The like looking up the other information in the book. Their favorite is the longest word.

Members of our American Legion Auxiliary unit plus Legionnaires go to the school and present the dictionary to each third grade student. The schools each year plan for the arrival of the dictionaries in their third grade curriculums, and uses them as class material throughout the third grade school year and during the following year in fourth grade. This is our first time to do this project. I (as ER) am very excited. I believe the more we do in our community to let people know what the Elks do is great. Reaching children and helping them with their education is what the Elks is all about.

The dictionaries will be distribued to all third graders in each of the four schools servicing the Ligonier Valley School District. This involves about 186 students plus teachers. Our club has been participating in this event for several years, and find it to be one of the most successful and gratifying projects we do. The kids love it.
