Rotary Clubs and Miami-Dade Public Library System give away dictionaries, atlases
A flurry of dictionaries and/or world atlases were delivered to four schools on Tuesday, December 8th and Wednesday, December 9th by Miami-Dade Public Library System staff and Rotarians from three Rotary Clubs. Debra Shepherd, from South Dade Regional, along with the South Miami Rotary Club President Pansy Graham, presented 180 books to the Adult Literacy Program at Robert Morgan. Jessica Van Smith from the Coral Gables Branch along with Diana Phillips, Past President of the Rotary Club of South Miami, presented 405 world atlases to the entire sixth grade of Ponce de Leon Middle School. Nancy Matos from Miami Lakes Branch and Kristina Michel from North Dade Regional, along with the Bob Metelus, President of the Rotary Club of Opa Locka / Miami Gardens, presented 254 World Atlases to the entire sixth grade of Lake Stevens Middle School. Lastly, Michele Dye and Randy Ramos from Naranja Branch along with members of the Homestead Rotary Club, presented 205 Webster`s Dictionaries to the entire third grade and 49 World Atlases to the gifted third graders of Avocado Elementary. Overall, in two days 1,093 free books were hand delivered to students from this combined and ongoing partnership between Miami Dade Rotary Clubs and the MDPLS!
Other Dictionary Projects include: The Rotary Club of Doral distributed over 650 dictionaries to three elementary schools in the Doral area in mid-December, 2009. Carol City Elementary School third graders received 95 dictionaries thanks to the Rotary Club of Opa-Locka on Thursday, May 13, 2010. One Hundred and three dictionaries were distributed at Howard Drive Elementary by the Miami-Dadeland-Pinecrest Rotary and Sharon Carpenter of the Pinecrest Branch Library on June 3rd, 2010.
Overall, there were 3,412 books distributed during the 2009-10 school year.
