Defining literacy
Anderson Mill Elementary third-grade students, such as Sophia and Jo pictured, received dictionaries and thesauruses Oct. 26 through the Dictionary Project sponsored by the Williamson County Republican Women. Each student received one thesaurus and one dictionary to take home, while third-grade teachers received a classroom set of dictionaries and thesauruses.
This was the fifth year the Williamson County Republican Women group has been a part of the Dictionary Project, said the organization’s Literacy Chair, Shawn Bailey.
Bailey said the Dictionary Project is a way to support education in the community and a way to build new student leaders. She and other members of the Williamson County Republican Women want other area organizations to be a part of this project.
In 2009, the Dictionary Project, which was originally started in South Carolina, distributed 83,172 dictionaries to Texas third-grade students, Bailey said.
