Project Smithville CHILD
Project Smithville Child (Communities helping impact literacy development) is sponsored by the Lowndes County Republican Women in honor of Mississippi’s First Lady, Deborah Bryant. The main focus of this project is to help rebuild classroom libraries in grades K-5 in Smithville Elementary. This school as well as the entire town of Smithville were leveled in the April 2011 storm. Books will be age-appropriate and embrace all ethnic backgrounds. Labels will be placed in the books to reflect the name of the project and sponsors. Enriching classroom libraries with books that foster a love of reading is an investment in our future as we strive for all Mississippians to excel at reading. Increasing these classroom libraries will provide teachers with valuable teaching tools. Another aspect of this project would be to provide the Smithville Elementary third graders with age-appropriate dictionaries purchased from the nationally known Dictionary Project. These dictionaries would belong to the children and not the school which would give parents an additional educational resource with which to assist their children in the quest of an education.
