Dictionary project going strong
The Wayne County Community Foundation has a longstanding dedication to the education of students in Wayne County, and the Foundation’s Dictionary Project places that interest directly into the hands of its young people.
In addition to monetary donations to area schools in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, the Foundation has over the past 11 years gifted 3,600 dictionaries to students in the third grade.
Though technology has insinuated itself into many aspects of learning, there still remains no viable substitute for pages filled with words and their meanings — pages where the mind’s eye can search and wander and discover.
These vibrant and delightfully illustrated dictionaries, published by Scholastic Books, may be a young student’s very first resource for a lifetime of learning.
As the children, teachers and parents have reported, these dictionaries offer a usable resource for understanding the English language and motivating young people to expand their vocabulary.
The Foundation sincerely thanks those who have supported this program in the past and invites anyone wishing to become a sponsor for the Third Grade Dictionary Project to contact the Wayne County Community Foundation at 214 Ninth Street, Honesdale, PA 18431 or phone (570) 499-4299 or email wccf@ptd.net or look for the Wayne County Community Foundation on the web at www.waynefoundation,org.
If it is wished, for every $10 donated a dictionary may be dedicated from the sponsor and/or to a special recipient in a beautifully hand inscribed bookplate.
