Community Involvement Ideas: My American Hero Essay Contest

Each spring, the Lake Conroe Area Republican Women(LCARW) hold an annual My American Hero Essay Contest at nine elementary schools in Montgomery ISD and Willis ISD, Texas. Each fourth grade student writes an essay entitled “My American Hero” and receives a personalized My American Hero certificate. Members of LCARW read essay submissions from each school to determine a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Special place winner along with 10 honorable mention winners. In May, the LCARW hosts a special luncheon for all the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Special place winners, their parents, teachers, principals, and superintendents. The 1st place winners from each school read their essays to the audience and all winners receive a gift bag which includes a dictionary. LCARW Member Judy Parada commented, “This project is the highlight of our year.” Members have participated in The Dictionary Project since 2003. We are proud to partner with groups like the Lake Conroe Area Republican Women who value community involvement and promote reading and writing skills.
