SOAR Adult and Family Literacy of the Salem Public Library, IN
The mission of SOAR Adult and Family Literacy is to increase literacy by promoting and providing educational resources for adults and families in the community. To accomplish this goal, SOAR currently participates in two youth programs: Put Your Nose In A Book (1st grade) and The Dictionary Project (3rd grade). Since 2009, SOAR and its dedicated volunteers have donated over 2000 dictionaries to third grade students in Washington County.
Longtime SOAR volunteers Alice Nevels and Ken Powell, along with Director Stephanie K. Rockey, who conducts this project, visited three local schools and gave each third grader a dictionary and bookmark with a list of community sponsors:
Ace Hardware of Salem, Burl & Carmelita Jean, First Harrison Bank, Fredericksburg Lions Club, Hunt’s Hard Surface Solutions, Jeans’ Extrusions, Jerry & Sherry Hammond, Kearschner Family Dentistry, Knapp Miller Brown Insurance, Norman and Anne Terrell, Regions Bank, Rita Elliott, Ron Haendiges State Farm Insurance, Salem Exchange Club, Salem Lions Club, Salem Masons #21 FM & AM, and Tom E. Scifres-Attorney at Law.
“Because of our sponsors and volunteers, this year’s project was a huge success!” said SOAR Director Stephanie K. Rockey.
