JC Elementary Students Receive Over 150 Dictionaries to Take Home.
Representatives from the JC Rotary and JC Elks Lodge went to multiple 3rd-grade classes, giving out a dictionary to take home and read, and a bookmark to help, continuing an over 20-year-old tradition at the school.
The day’s activities are a part of the nationwide “Dictionary Project”,
Promoting literacy among students, with over 170 dictionaries given out today.
Rocky Martinez from the JC Rotary and Russel Ryan from the JC Elks Lodge have been bringing dictionaries to the school for over twenty years.
“They are enthralled with the opportunity. What they can learn through this, through this book. So they go and they research the longest word. They find Braille. And you can see kids walking down the hall practicing sign language. So it’s a, it’s an opportunity to enhance them and, and give back a little bit,” Martinez said.
Students in the classes called the books “the best dictionary ever”.
“It absolutely helps with their their reading. They see a word that they don’t understand, and in one of their books, they can look it up in their dictionary. They really enjoy a lot of information in that book,” Ryan said.
