Look it up!
For the fourth year Minden-Douglas Elks gave all third-grade students in Douglas County their own dictionary. This year 485 dictionaries will be distributed. Pictured at Meneley Elementary School on October 15 are third grader Stephanie McMillan, Elks members George Johnson and Tom Zogorski, third grade teacher Alisha Cummins, students Caitlin, Logan, Tobin, and Shannon. Third-grade teachers not pictured are Krystal Koontz and Elida Diaz. The students were also given a coloring book that contains information about staying drug-free.
In a letter to The Dictionary Project, George C. Johnson writes:
`I am the Chairman for our Dictionary Project with the Minden-Douglas Elks Lodge # 2670 here in northern Nevada. Attached you will find a newspaper article regarding our distribution of dictionaries to all of our local elementary schools (7) here in Douglas County. Myself and a couple other Elks went to each elementary school and personally presented a dictionary to each third grader. Oh, to see the joy and excitement in their eyes, they were so pleased to receive their own personal dictionary and to be able to take it home to do homework and then go back to school with it where the teachers would help them correctly use the dictionary. I have been doing this project for four years now and this program truly makes me feel that I am returning to the community that helped me so much over the years. Over these four years I have run into older children that remember me and tell me that they still have their dictionary and use it nearly daily. Thank you so very much for having this program that we are able to be part of, keep up your good work and we will continue to be part of it as long as I am around.`
