New Vision Pioneers WV Chapter #42 Donates Dictionaries to West Virginia Third Graders
Aiming to promote literacy in West Virginia, the Verizon Pioneers teamed up with The Dictionary Project in 2004. “A natural fit for volunteers who made their careers in the field of communications, the Pioneers gave dictionaries to children to encourage them to read and learn for a successful future.” Since starting the project, the WV Chapter #42 Clubs and Councils have presented over 9,500 dictionaries to students in the state of West Virginia. Each year, members try to cover at least two schools in every county. To fundraise for community involvement projects like The Dictionary Project, the WV Chapter #42 sells flowers and gifts through their fundraising website. Not only do the arrangements make a beautiful gift, 12% of all sales going to support Pioneer projects in their local community.
To express her appreciation and the school’s gratitude for the New Vision Pioneers WV Chapter #42’s donation, one teacher wrote:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the New Vision Pioneers for providing dictionaries to our third grade students here at Cameron Elementary School in Marshall County, WV. Our students use them daily in their many writing tasks across all of the curriculum. In having these dictionaries as one of their learning tools, it very useful and vital to complete their work and saves the students and teachers a lot of time because the students are able to look up, find, spell, pronounce, and write the words and definitions correctly. It is necessary and we appreciate the donations we receive every year, and for the ones in the past. Again, thank you for your continued donation of dictionaries and support for our kids here in Cameron, WV.
