3rd graders receive early graduation gifts

 All 3rd graders in Decatur County Schools received dictionaries recently as part of the national Dictionary Project. The dictionaries are provided by the Kiwanis Club of Bainbridge and also helping to distribute them is Decatur County Family Connection.

Mr. Cleveland explained all the information that was inside of the dictionaries and after a showing of hands when the students were asked if they planned to graduate from high school, Cleveland also told them that this was their first graduation present.

This is the sixth year for the Dictionary Project in Decatur County. The Dictionary Project began in Savannah, Georgia, in 1992 when Annie Plummer gave 50 dictionaries to children who attended a school close to her home. After her death in 1999 the dream continued and grew.

The Dictionary Project was adopted and refined by civic organizations all over the world including Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs, Granges, Lions Clubs, The Republican Federation of Women and The Jewish Council of Women, who have implemented The Dictionary Project where they live.

The dictionaries are a wealth of information including history, math, science and even sign language. The goal of the Dictionary Project is to improve the reading ability and comprehension of all children, everywhere, and to help them to use the English language effectively.
