Vestal Elks to distribute dictionaries to Vestal School District’s third graders for eighth year

Third-grade students at all five elementary schools in the Vestal School District will be receiving a special gift on Friday, November 5. For the eighth year in a row, Vestal Elks Lodge #2508 will be giving every third grader their very own dictionary. Media representatives are invited to attend the 10:30 a.m. distribution at Glenwood Elementary, 337 Jones Road, Vestal.

Vestal Elks Youth Chair Patty Fitzgerald said, ‘This is one of the best programs that we do. It really brings the children together to learn how to be better writers, creative thinkers and active readers. Every year, the Elks receive ‘thank you’ letters from the third-grade classes who received dictionaries. The best one was from a student who wrote that his family asked him to look up a word for them. The kids love being able to do that.’

The Dictionary Project is a nonprofit organization with the goal of assisting all students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing students with their very own dictionary. By working with civic organizations all over the country, such as Vestal Elks Lodge No. 2508, the Dictionary Project has helped over 14 million children to date. Last year alone, 2,488,454 dictionaries were given to students as a gift from people who live in their town.
