TCAPS’ students receive dictionaries from the Dictionary Project

 Third grade students in all 13 TCAPS elementary schools have benefitted from the generous donation of dictionaries by the Kiwanis Club of Traverse City. As part of the Dictionary Project the Kiwanis have donated dictionaries to local students for the past three years. The dictionaries can be used throughout students` entire school careers. Having a dictionary in the home serves as a resource for the whole family. It is a valuable resource to improve vocabulary and encourage children to learn more words.

The idea for The Dictionary Project began in 1992 when Annie Plummer of Savannah, Georgia gave 50 dictionaries to children who attended a school close to her home. Many people have implemented The Dictionary Project since then. Since 1995 over 14 million children have received dictionaries because thousands of people saw the same need in communities all over the United States.

The project was made possible through generous assistance from Front Street Investment Management, the Anderson Family Foundation, Fred and Tina Tank, and the Bank of Northern Michigan.
