This is the third year we have donated dictionaries to third grades in both towns. It’s one activity where all our members want to participate. The cards, letters, and posters from students thanking us are very gratifying. Several teachers incorporate the dictionaries into their lesson plans. The Wabash Valley Community Foundation has partnered with the Terre Haute Rotary Club, the Brazil Rotary Club and the Sullivan Rotary Club over the past four years to provide dictionaries to every third grade student in Clay, Sullivan and Vigo counties in West Central Indiana. Coordinated effort amongst various civic organizations (Paramount Petroleum, Paramount Lady Elks, Paramount Women’s Club, Paramount Friends of the Library, and citizens of Paramount, CA) to help our children with their education. As one Sheriff Deputy said, “If I give to this effort now, maybe I won’t have to spend so much effort later on to get the kids back on track.”

We have given dictionaries for three years. Although we have different students each year, they seem to be more excited each year; news travels even at that age. Scholarships and high grades are given to high achievers, my hopes are to reach someone on the other side of the scale.

This is the 3rd year that our Rotary Club has provided all 3rd graders in Pacific Grove Unified School District with a student dictionary. We started this project five years ago. Last year we expanded the project to include Spanish/English dictionaries along with the dictionary to every third grader. This year we are also including dictionaries, Atlas and Thesaurus for some Junior and Senior high students. This is our fourth year in the program and we provide dictionaries to all fourth-graders in the county. Rotarians visit the schools to hand out the dictionaries and have the opportunity to meet and talk to the children as we do it. Great program! This is 3rd or 4th year we have participated. We believe this to be a worthwhile thing to do. The schools have been happy to have the students get these dictionaries to own. Thank you for the opportunity to participate and help the students in our community.
