We have participated for four years. We love to see the children’s excitement as they receive their books. Some of them may find these dictionaries the key to mastering the language! Who can tell what benefits can be received? A few years ago, I was in an attorney’s office for a fundraiser. A client had a young girl (perhaps 12) with them. She said, “Oh, yes, Kiwanis – they gave me a dictionary.”

What a joy to see the look on children’s faces when they receive these dictionaries. Before we’re gone, they are practicing sign language, looking up presidents, figuring out how to find words. They are excited about all the visitors to the classroom, they get a bit of attention from strange adults, and they feel a bit important. We try to explain how much better they will do in school and when they grow up if they know words and the English Language well. This year, while selling peanuts as a fund-raiser, some children and their parents remembered getting dictionaries from us! That was a great feeling!
